CreativityCorp tests Mobile Data Studio on many Smartphones and Tablets, here we share some of our views on devices on which to deploy Mobile Data Studio. While commenting on other devices, the Apple iPhone and iPad are excellent platforms for Mobile Data Studio; the screen of the iPhone 4 is probably the best of all devices for viewing outdoors in direct sunlight. The Apple iPod Touch can be used as a low cost device to run Mobile Data Studio. It should be noted that both the non-3G iPad and iPod Touch require WiFi assistance for GPS functions.

Samsung Galaxy Note

BIG SCREEN: At CreativityCorp we test many Smartphones and Tablets to run Mobile Data Studio software to collect business data. The 5.3 inch screen Android Samsung Galaxy Note is an excellent device for business data use. In the field collecting business data, users prefer to have one device rather than a phone and another perhaps larger screen device to enter data. The Samsung Galaxy Note perfectly covers both requirements and fits in a pocket.

SMART STYLUS: A stylus is essential for many business data requirements but most third party styluses are weak compared to the excellent S Pen which fits neatly into the body of the Galaxy Note. For example, for customers to sign on accepting deliveries, or acceptance of field service of an air conditioner or photocopier, to sketch identify crash damage on a photo of a motor vehicle, identify a person in a large group photo, sketch on photos during home inspections etc. The smart S Pen can also be used to capture screen shots.

FAST GPS: The Galaxy Note uses A-GPS (US satellites) and GLONASS (Russian satellites), which combines to improve accuracy by 50% relative to GPS alone. In our experience the GPS in the Samsung Galaxy Note gained a fix within 10 seconds 'out of the box' which is excellent for field surveys requiring GIS information alongside other data collected in environmental, mining, asset tracking and other projects. And the 5.3 inch screen is large enough for practical use of maps.

BATTERY LIFE: Add to these attributes, good battery life and screen visibility outdoors and the Samsung Galaxy Note is the best mobile device yet for business data. We give it 5 out of 5 stars and in June 2012 number one for business data collection and use amongst Smartphones and Tablets.

PROTECTION: The Samsung Galaxy Note can be protected in the field by an OtterBox, flip covers and water and dust protectors.

Samsung Galaxy Camera

The Samsung Galaxy Camera with an Android operating system extends image capture power beyond that of a Smartphone. The Samsung Camera has a 21x zoom, powerful flash and manual controls in addition to automatic setting. The Samsung Camera running Mobile Data Studio is particularly useful where subjects for images require an optical zoom and higher quality images; for example, surveys of advertising boards, audits of power infrastructure, identification of tree overhang of power lines, forensic investigations, home inspections. For large high quality images set Camera point Properties 'Capture image size' to 1024x768 pixels and Samsung Camera 'Photo size' to 1024x768 pixels. If presenting the image in a Sketch point, set the Sketch point 'Canvas Size' to either 1024x768 pixels or 20 Lines.
